runaway "snapshot" hogging hyper-v host C: drive after failed 2K8

Message:

Dell PE 2900, Server 2008 Enterprise, Hyper-V, 4 virtual servers

I have two problems. Both relate to virtual machines and host disk space on
C:.

I'm backing up all VM's from the Hyper-V host using Windows Server 2008
Backup. Last night, the backup failed - says not enough space to create the
volume shadow copy. In the host event viewer, I see a volsnap error 41 at 23
seconds after the backup started.

I look at the host, and the C: drive has like 23 megs left out of 150 Gb! I
frantically start drilling down the tree, and find:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Snapshots\24BEE06E...

inside are

virtual c drive...avhd about 25 Gb
virtual d drive...avhd about 45 Gb

....but these virtual C and D drives are only 8 Gigs each! Every time I look
at the above directory, the time stamp on the C drive changes to a minute or
two behind the system time, and the D drive has changed only once, from 0700
to 0756. The C: drive file is slowly growing. And in Hyper-V, I don't have a
snapshot of any virtual server, so I'm assuming this is from 2008 backup's
VSS-aware snapshot?

This virtual server is, of course, running the bet-the-business application,
so I'm being really careful not to make it unhappy.

How to fix this? Stop Hyper-V and delete? Stop that virtual machine and
delete? Cycle Hyper-V? Reboot the host? Delete star dot star? Small arms fire?

I have another problem also apparently related to my failed SP2 upgrade
attempt on the Hyper-V host last weekend. I have in the following directory:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines

four directories that look like this:

D1476217-EF67-495E-8C59-47BA5440FCB8

inside each are two files:

8C59-47BA5440FCB8.bin - 2/4 Gb (I have (1) 2 gb and (3) 4 gb virtuals)
8C59-47BA5440FCB8.vsv - 20 Gb

for a total of 14 Gb. All the directories and files therein have a time and
date stamp of 5/30-0907 - the time the host server rebooted after the failed
upgrade, with one exception. One has a stamp of today at 0756, so I'm
figuring it must be the same virtual server as the first problem above.

I have another PE 2900 Hyper-V host with 4 virtual servers, that I
successfully upgraded to SP2, and for comparison, it doesn't even have a
C:\programdata directory!

I would like to blow away all of this, and clear up the space. I was able to
clear up enough space on the host C: drive to get me out of the water, but I
obviously need to understand the cause, and fix the issue at hand.

Thank you in advance for any guidance on this issue.
