Hello all

I have 2008 R2 enterprise setup in a lab, and i am currently testing out
live migrations. I am reading

questions regarding the "clusterd shared volume" its not clear to me from
reading the document what this resource is used for? In the document under
"setup a virtual machine for live migration" it says " you need to create
the virtual machine, and configure it to use cluster shared volumes. I
followed the steps in the "Hyper-V step-by step guide: hyper-V failover
clustering" when i created the hyper-V image i stored the VHD for the image
on a iscsi lun. This is one of the options i had to make the image highly
available. When i test out live migration i am able to migrate the image
from one physical node to another physical node succesfuly. This is why i am
confused when i read the Hyper-V step by step guide, when it says i need to
crreate the virtual machine to use the cluster shared volume.

Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) fixes the single-lun-per-VM issue.
When you store mutliple VM's on one LUN and do a quick migration (still
talking pre-R2 here) of one VM, all VM's have to migrate to your other node.
This is because a LUN can only be "mapped" to one node.

This is where CSV comes in. When you do a live migration of one VM, all
other VM's can remain on the same node. CSV handles this for you.

Now, if you use a single-LUN-per-VM, you actually don't need CSV. Because
the single LUN can be mapped to the other node when you do a live migration.

Hope this clears things out for you.

perfect explanation. Do you think Windows 2008 R2 combined with SCVM will or
can compete with VMware? i get bagged on all the time for promoting R2 and
SCVM

Ah... the never ending VMware vs Hyper-V ;)
In my opinion... yes it can.
The performance of the two are good; Hyper-V in some scenarios has higher
performance (eg. in virtualized RDS (formerly TS) environments), but VMWare
is better in some other scenarios (eg. VDI).

Microsoft is advertising with the cost-saving benefits... VMWare with
VMotion and memory over-commit. With Win2k8 R2, the VMotion benefit will be
gone; and besides, how many customers would pay and addition 25k (I don't
know the exact numbers), just for this feature?!?! (which is not in all
VMWare license types)

We did some re-calculations about the cost savings and Hyper-V is indeed way
cheaper than VMWare. We've also done some performance tests with R2, which
actually are quite a lot better than v1 Hyper-V.

So, in my opinion, Hyper-V in combination with the System Center suite has
got a lot of advantages over VMWare. So not only SCVMM, but also integration
with SCOM and SCDPM; this provides even more advantage, because SCOM and
SCDPM can be used on physical machines, not only virtual.

Microsoft has a nice proposition with the SMS-E license agreement; you can
SCOM, SCDPM, SCCM and SCVMM under one license on your virtualized
environment. If you're interested in the SC suite, take a look at that.

I can ramble along for pages... but this is just my $0.02 :)
