Hi Folks,

I'm in the process of setting a server up with the following:

408GB Raid5
32GB RAM
Running: Server 2008 Host / SBS 2008 Hyper V / Server 2008 Hyper V

So i'm going to be running server 2008 for the host with 2 Hyper V
machines. just wondering what you would suggest for partition sizes
for each, mainly how much to use for the host partition size. I'm not
exactly sure how big the paging file for the host will be once the VMs
are setup. Does the VM make the host's paging file shrink since the
VM is using the RAM?? Not sure how to setup the host and wanted to
get some ideas before proceeding. Thanks.

Interesting. You didn't mention how much RAM you were using. My
concern is the Paging file which is something to consider since we are
rolling out servers with 32gigs of ram now. Given the 1.5 x RAM
paging file, that's a lot of space for the paging file. Give me some
more info about your RAM and how big your paging files are. Thanks.

I chose a 60 GB host system size, primarily because it's on it's own raid 0
array (73 gb). Not sure what I was thinking when I left some unused space,
but I was thinking <something>.

I also have SBS08 and WS2k8 as VMs. They are each on their own raid 0 array,
a pair of 146's. The SBS uses 120 GB for it's .vhd's, the rest is left for
some large file that is created when the machine is running.

The WS2k8 has a 60 Gb vhd, there's room for other .vhd's on that array if
need be, say, a workstation for intermittent lab testing purposes.

I'm sure there are lots of variations though - much depends on how fault
tolerant it needs to be, and performance considerations. In my case, I'm
sacrificing a fair bit of disk space.

Currently, 10 Gb.

Without any prior thought or configuration on my part, the host pagefile is
set to 'automatically configure' or whatever the equivalent is; and the
pagefile happens to be 10 gb ;-).

My SBS VM uses 6 Gb, WS VM uses 2 Gb, a rarely used vista VM has 768. The
host gets what's left. I shut down the VMs prior to any updating of the
host.

I've got another box with the same two server VM's, but a production site -
it has 16 Gb ram and the VM's use the bulk of it. I've not checked the host
system pagefile.
