Dear all,

Is it possible to use Windows 2008 Core running on the Hyper-V role to do
backups of the VM guests? And if so, can this be done to tape?

I must admit that I find it totally pathetic that MS have not enabled
pass-through of SCSI tape drives to guests. It's an utter let down for me.

Run DPM. (System Center Data Protection Manager). It handles VMs
correctly. The whole System Center Family (except that poorly-assimilated
stepchild called Forefront) works well with Hyper-V.

And I guess if I install backup Exec on the Windows Core server (can that be
done, looks like it but I find the Symantec text ambiguous) I would have

I've claimed that the licensing allows running a backup application (or the
Windows Backup Feature) in the physical parent without breaking 1+1, and
I've never yet had a MS person disagree with me. As I read the licensing,
it's allowed.

For tape inside the VMs, your only real solution is probably iSCSI. There
are USB to Ethernet solutions (FabulaTech, for one) that work well, but USB
isn't exactly an ideal tape solution.
