Hello!
I try to install Virtual Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 SP1/Windows XP
SP2 and it fails due to some applied system administrator policy. I
understand this is due to restrictions in security from SP1/SP2.

Does anyone have a list of necessary steps to succeed with the installation,
except from rolling back SP1/SP2 and then install VS2005?

No, Virtual Server 2005 installs just fine on WS03SP1 and XPSP2.

If it is failing due to group policy, then obviously you either need to
change your group policy or not run Virtual Server.

It is known that the VS2005 admin website will not come up on WS03SP1 and
XPSP2 due to DCOM permission changes. It is fixed in VS2005SP1, and in the
meantime, you can fix it yourself:
1. Run "DCOMCNFG" (or navigate to the "Component Services" applet from
"Administrative Tools" off the start menu)
2. Navigate to Computers\My Computer\DCOM Config , find "Virtual Server",
and right click Properties
3. In "Security" Tab, click the Edit button in "Launch and Activation
Permissions"
4. Remove the entry in there that is denying local/remote launch/activation
5. Add in an entry that allows "Authenticated Users" Local Activation AND
Remote Activation privileges
6. OK out of everything.
