Dynamic .vhd expansion.

Hi, we're running a 2003 VM on a 2008 Hyper-V server with integration
services installed. The VM has two dynamic .vhd's, one for the OS and one
for data. The data .vhd recently expanded from 53GB to well over 100GB.
When I look at the size of the data on the drive inside the VM it's only
using 74GB, not 100GB+. Does anyone know exactly how a dynamic .vhd grows?
Everything I've read says that a dynamic .vhd should consume just over the
ammount of data on the drive. The overage is for header and footer
information. In this case it appears that the .vhd has grown by some
incremental amount rather than by the size of the data being consumed. Is
there any specific documentation on dynamic .vhd growth?
