When doing the VS2005 install (if I remember correctly from when I did

all items that refer to IIS or any web interfaces.
Those are only there to make it possible to manage the VS2005
installation and guests via web pages from Internet Explorer (does
probably not work with FireFox anyway).
Now the installation will go through a lot better (did for me).
To manage the VS installation you will then need to also download and
install the application VMRC+ from Microsoft. With this you can create
and modify guests and control how they should run etc.
Why did I do this? Well, I don't have IIS, I have Apache 2 installed
on my XP Pro host machine....

Hi Stewart,
Which Edition of Vista do you have?
If you have Business or Ultimate, then go to Control Panel, Programs and
Features, and select "Turn Windows features on or off". Expand the Internet
Information Services, Web Management Tools and select IIS 6 Management
Compatibility. IIS 6 Metabase is there. Apply, OK.
Home Editions do have limited IIS capabilities - off the top of my head I'm
not too sure what they contain.

I am running Ultimate. I installed IIS Metabase and IIS6 configuration
compatibility. Although it didn't ask for one I did a system restart.
I then tried to install Virtual Server 2005 R2 and got the same message:
"Please install IIS-Metabase (IIS6 Management compatibility) prior to
installing this software"
Do I have to install all of IIS6 Management Compatibility?

Is that the Virtual Server Web Application? There aren't any sub pieces so
it's all or nothing.

Try to uncheck it and see what happens. I think you will be able to
install.
Then you just need to use VMRC+ to manage the VS2005 system like I do
on several PC:s. All of them are XP Pro PC:s, which do not have the
server class IIS available anyway.

I went back and installed all of the IIS components I could find. I was
able to publish my web site to a local directory.
I then installed Virtual Server 2005 R2. At the end of the process it
opened a web page (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server\summary.html)
with links to the Administration website. I clicked on it
(http://nysabv0007/VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1) and got:
HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized

Even though IIS is installed and allows multiple web sites the Virtual

I am logged in as an Administrator on the physical machine. In fact I am
logged on as the only administrator on the physical machine.
How do I open the Virtual Server administrator web page?

You can search this newsgroup for admin website problems and you will
find at least one each week all asking "why can I not log in to the
admin website"...
There are so many problems that I cannot understand why any sane
person still uses it.
Probably it works OK if you have a server class host PC and this is
why MS does not fix it (workstation class PC:s are not supported for
Virtual Server...)
My advice *still* is:
- Install *without* the IIS components.
- Install VMRC+ as the admin console *application*
- Get started with the real work you want to do with VS2005

I can now create virtual servers.

I agree with Bo. Running the admin website on Vista is a not pleasant.
It was designed to work on Windows Server with IIS6. It can be made to work
on Vista with IIS7 but it is a pain.
