Running Windows XP sp2 host OS
Guest OS Windows XP home

Yes, it happens. It is usually an incompatibility between Virtual Machine
Network Services and the driver for the NIC. Check the manufacturer's
website to see if there is a newer driver for the NIC in the host machine.
