New Server for SharePoint Proof of Concept - disk configuration question

Message:

I've been using Virtual Server and Hyper-V on small installations, so I'm
familiar with the concepts, but only in small, essentially, test situations.
For example I've used Virtual Server and now Hyper-V at home on a few
computers for beta testing of Server 2003, 2008, Vista, Vista SP1 etc.

At work we've acquired a new server for building a Proof of Concept for
using SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) for one or more web sites. I've done a small
amount of experimenting with SharePoint 3.0 with SQL Server 2005.

I'm going to install Windows Server 2008 with the Hyper-V role enabled and
install SQL Server and SharePoint 2007 in seperate virtual machines.

The server has a quad core processor, 16 GB of RAM and 5 500 GB hard disks
connected to a RAID controller.

I know that with Hyper-V, one can attach a physical hard disk to a virtual
machine as opposed to using a virtual disk (VHD), which is what I've always
done in the past.

Not being an expert on RAID, SQL Server or SharePoint 2007, I'm wondering
about how to configure the disks. Since this is a Proof of Concept, it is
not a "production" environment and thus outages for various reasons,
including hardware failures, can be tolerated.

I may end up re-installing some or all of the stuff over the course of the
Proof of Concept project as we find out more about SharePoint and evovle
exactly what we want to end up with.

I've considered a few alternatives and would welcome observations and
suggestions about which one might serve well (best?) particularly with
respect to flexibility and performance (the load will be small - no more
than half a dozen concurrent users):

1. configure all 5 disks as a single RAID 5 set, define two partitions:
a. ~ 100 GB for the "parent" OS installation
b. the rest for data
use classic virtual disk (files) for the virtual machines (probably two
for each machine)

2. configure:
a. one disk as a standalone disk for the "parent" OS - create two
partions as in 1 - put the OS drives for the two virtual machines as VHD
files on the second partition
b. assign two of the disks as physical disks to each of the virtual
machines, make them Dynamic and structure each pair as a single volume

3. configure
a. on disk as in 2.a
b. configure the remaining 4 as a single RAID 5 set and put two large
virtual disks on it - one for each of the virtual machines for their data

4. others?

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
