Guest OS NIC not working

Hello,

I have just set up a Hyper V RTM server currently running (2) guest OS's.
Both guests are running Server 2003. Guest #1 works just fine. I can't get
the NIC to work correctly in Guest #2 however. If I set it to use DHCP, it
works just fine. If I give it a static IP I get an error saying "The IP
address 172.23.10.40 you have entered for this network adapter is already
assigned to another adapter 'Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter
#2' 'Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter #2' is hidden from the
Network Connections folder because it is not physically in the computer. If
the same address is assigned to both adapters and they both become active,
only one of them will use this address. This may result in incorrect system
configuration. Do you want to enter a different IP address for this adapater
in the list of IP addreses in the Advanced dialog box?" If I say yes it just
wants me to configure a different IP, if I say no it lets me out but nothings
works. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is keeping me from
rolling out other Guests behind this one....

That is just a warning message and comes from Server 2003, not from
Hyper-V. You get the same message from physical machines if you try to
re-use an IP which has previously been used and the OS is still aware of
that NIC.

What do you have against configuring a different IP? But if you say no,
it should not affect the operation of the NIC. I have done it both ways and
both work.

The quick and dirty,

Goto command prompt and enter set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
Then enter start devmgmt.msc to start device manager
In the device manager window, click view and show hidden devices
Under network adapters you will see the conflicting device, most probably the Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter
Now you may add that IP to your NIC.
