I'm getting "A network cable is unplugged" errors somewhat frequently in
various virtual machines within VS 2005 R2. The only way I can find to clear
this is to reboot the host server or the VM (both are hit and miss). Is
there an easier method?

Get better NICs, or more of them, to distribute the networking load. This is
a fairly frequent complaint from lower end NICs, especially if the
underlying OS is Server 2k3 SP2 or later. You can try turning off TCP
Offload, etc., which gets turned on automatically with SP2 - that can
sometimes help.

You should be also be able to change the NIC to "not connected", wait a
little, then reconnect it to the network. This should clear a transient
problem.

Thanks Charlie. I do have two NICS - a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit that came
with my DELL PowerEdge, and a D-Link DGE-530T Gigabit. The latter only is
running the Virtual Machine Network Services.

Some do. But you can also go into the Registry and set them. Not where I can
check right now, but something like
HKLM:/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/TCPIP/Parameters. Look for and
disable TCPA, RSS, TCPChimney.
