From what i remember of it XP diskdrive handlers are not as advanced as
server versions.
Wonder why you want it.
I wanted to do it for defrag operations, i found a command line defrager
which i know schedule inside the hosts so i will (later) script to run
compact and inspect.
If it is for defraging under XP, another option might be adding it
temporarly under another guest as an extra disk (from which you not boot) >
then its only data and it could be easily defraged....
damn now i'm thinking of this why didn't i thought of it earlier ?
( As much as possible i want to automate for the labs...)

A few developers are getting new laptops to replace their old ones.
They have been using VPC in order to test software in different
scenarios and are quite happy with that.
Now they face the task of installing all of their tools into a new PC
and set up the development environment like they had it in the old
laptop. So they started thinking and came up with this:
- What if we create a virtual machine on the new laptop
- and then somehow transfer the old laptop into this
- would we then not get productive immediately?
I know the problems of hardware differences making a repair install of
XP-Pro necessary after a transfer. But the main problem here is how to
transfer the image of the laptop hard disk into the virtual
environment???
We thought of this P2V method:
1) we create an image (ghost or Acronis) on a secondary disk attached
to the original laptop via USB2.
2) We create a new empty virtual hard disk and attach it to a working
virtual machine as disk 2.
3) We now want to move the *big* disk image from the extra drive where
it resides onto the vhd file in the running guest. How?
4) When it is done we shut down the virtual machine and detach the vhd
disk from it.
5) We create a new virtual machine with an empty *big* vhd disk. We
attach the VHD disk now containing the disk image file and start the
VM.
6) We capture the Ghost/Acronis boot CD (ISO file) in the guest so it
boots off it.
7) Now we should be able to restore the image from the file on disk #2
to disk #1 using ghost/acronis.
8) When done we would reboot the machine without the boot CD in the
drive and most probably see a bluescreen...
9) So we boot the XP-Pro install disk instead and go to the "Repair
existing installation" option, so hardware diffs can be resolved.
In this scenario we have detected a problem in step #3 above.
THis is where I thought of the VHDmount (which does not work) as a
measn of attaching the (empty) VHD disk to the PC and then making a
regular file copy from the USB disk to the VHD disk of the image file.
Is there any other way we could transfer the image file, or for that
matter any other way we could directly image the physical disk from
the old laptop to a VHD virtual disk???

I decided to test VMWare Converter and then use VMWare Player for the
resulting machine.
Worked really good:
- First create a clone virtual machine from a running PC (over the
network).
- Then use the function to reconfigure the hardware in the cloned
machine to adjust the hardware on the virtual machine to match the
emulated hardware.
- Then start up the machine in Player. Had to re-activate the XP-Pro
Windows due to the massive hardware changes, but then it ran without a
hitch!
So I don't need my elaborate long procedure to do P2V anymore. It's
done! :-)
