Game prompts for CD

I'm trying to play an old Windows 95 game ("Fallen Haven") using VPC (host OS
is Vista, guest OS is Windows 98). I was successfully able to get the game
to install, but when I try to play the game it asks for you to insert the CD.

I tried the "Use Physical Drive E:" option (with the game disc inserted, of
course), but it still asks for the CD, and still refuses to start without it.
I created an ISO image file of the CD and mounted it, with the same results:
the game prompts for the CD, and refuses to start without it.

I tried adding my CD-ROM drive to Shared Folders, but the guest OS doesn't
recognize when I insert a CD, and it thinks the drive is an empty folder.

My question is, is the there any way to get the guest OS to recognize that I
have the disc inserted?

The CD is likely copy protected.

You could try one of the Virtual CD programs, e.g. Alcohol 120%, to make an
image for the program's virtual CD drive.

If your host OS is Vista, try launching VPC as administrator. If that
doesn't work it's probably not possible. (launch VPC as administrator
allows some different things that might let it work)

Some old games require the CDROM to be a lower drive letter like "D"
or "E".

Another thing that I've seen happen is that they'll record the drive they
were installed from and will only look at that drive when they try to start
up.

Try this...

Start up VPC
Attach VPC to the physical drive.
Put VPC on the task bar (minimize it).
Put the CD in the drive.
See if Vista prompts you for what to do with the CD.
If it does, just cancel the dialogue
Go back to VPC.
Try to open the drive in Windows Explorer.
Watch for the "light" in the corner of the CD icon at the bottom of VPC to
light up.
Watch for the physical drive to spin up or it's activity LED to go on.
Close explorer and start the game.
See if you get the same results on the icon and the drive as you did when
you explored it.

If you don't, it's not looking at the right drive.

If you get the icon light, but none on the physical drive, there's a problem
with accessing the physical drive.
