I've got an "old" PC, about 6 years old, and I'd like to try Virtual PC on
it. Currently it has XP Home, but I do have copies of XP Pro and Vista.
Legal. :-)

MS's utility says the computer can run Vista, but I'm sure I'd be pushing
things if I did.

I found some articles in the knowledge base about Vir PC 2004, but they all
seem to redirect me to the Vir PC 2007 pages. And this intro talks only
about using 2007 on Vista.

Is there still anyplace where I can learn about 2004 and what I'd be able to
do with it?

From reading a thread in this group, I gather you can make 2004 run under
Home, but you have to manually edit some file. I've forgotten which file.

I don't mind installing XP Pro. I don't have any desire to run Vista at the
moment, what I'd like to do is run a couple older MS operating systems,
including DOS occasionally.

Wrong, VPC will run just fine on XP Home, the only thing you have to
consider is that you cannot call Microsoft for support if you use VPC
on XP Home.
During install there will be a message saying thta there is no support
for Home, but just continue, VPC will styill install and work fine on
Home.

If this is what you need then you should also check out Steve Jain's
website with resources for VPC (http://vpc.essjae.com/). Here are
instructions for creating virtual machines running old Windows and
also download of files no longer distributed with VPC2007.

I'm actually prepared, surprisingly. I've already downloaded both 2004 and
2007.

But I wanted to do some reading in whatever passes for a manual to see what
kind of issues I might have to deal with, and just couldn't find much other
than frustration (again) from MS's web sites.

Bo Bergland gave me a website to look at, and I've saved that page to my
hard drive to look at later before I actually install either one. But my
normal "look before you leap" attitude towards anything Windows OS related
tells me to use the 2004 version, unless I learn something different from the
page Bo suggested.

What I have done, though, is to make this a multiboot machine and installed
XP Pro on the other partition. The plan is to use this partition as a "test
bed" for new software before installing the new software elsewhere for daily
use. I've got a disk image of the partition with just XP Pro and
anti-everything software installed so resetting back to an earlier state will
be easier.

That's really the same goal I have for VPC, but I don't trust anying Windows
OS related to work correctly anymore.

If you're read my reply to Bill Grant, you'll know what I've done to this
point, and my plans.

I must have misread/misunderstood the post I read about hacking some files.
But I don't want to hack any files anyway.

I'll read the info on the website you suggested before installing anything,
and thanks for that site.

As for asking questions....... I don't access these newsgroups often, but
invariably when I do, someone always asks me for more information! So now I
always tell people to feel free to ask about something I've forgotten to
place in my original post. LOL

VPC is just an application program. If you don't like it, just uninstall
it. It makes minimal changes to your installation.

Why not just install it under your XP Pro in your test partition?

You read my mind, that's exactly why the XP Pro partition exists.

But I've learned that when you "uninstall", everything is definitlely NOT
removed. Folders are left behind, as are registry entries. So programs are
only "partially" removed. Which irritates me to no end, as those "hanging
chads" often cause me problems down the road.

Now I get around it by testing in a different OS partition, plus making disk
images of that OS's partition. When I get done testing the new application,
I just install the disk image, and Poof!, it's like it never happened.

Sorry for not replying sooner, the MS Noreply email got caught in my ISP's
