is Vista Business 64bit. I am new to VPC. I have backed up an XP pro PC using
all Acronis goodies.

In my Virtual PC Console - XP virtual machine (no OS installed - just XP
attribute) - I boot from Acronis OK (Acronis boot CD) - Acronis fires up and
after a few steps asks for it's backup file in order to restore it - and
offers the 'locations' dialogue - problem is that Acronis cannot see any HDs
outside the VPC.

I contacted Acronis and they said I need to set up the VM to 'see' HDs
outside it.

I read the 'Install Virtual Machine Additions' and hoped it would be the
saviour. However (and it may not be the saviour) I cannot install them as it
seems XP needs to be already installed in/on the virtiual machine.

I may be in a catch-22 situation ...or not. Whatever...I am stuck.

When you created the Acronis Boot CD, did you select all of the options
including networking? This allows you to select other computers in your
network from the "Computers Near Me" node in the restore location tree:

Probably they mean that you need to configure the VM's virtual NIC to point
at your host's physical NIC as opposed to e.g. "None" or "Shared Networking"
so that the rest of your network is visible to the Acronis Boot CD...

The Additions are utilities for operating systems installed on virtual
machines, not for the virtual machines themselves...

You can do as follows provided you have at least one virtual machine
running Windows 2000, XP or similar:

1) Use the VPC2007 Disk Wizard to create a new virtual disk.

2) Attach this disk to the existing virtual machine. Shut it down
completely, then open the settings for the virtual machine and click
on hard disk 2, then use the browser to select the VHD file you
created in 1) above.

3) Now start the virtual machine and once logged in go to disk
management where you can initialize, partition and format the VHD
drive you created.

4) Now connect via networking from the virtual machine to the host
where you have the Acronis backup file and copy the backup file over
to the newly created VHD disk.

5) Shut down the guest again.

6) Go into the settings again and now set Hard disk 2 as "None". This
will be the same as taking the disk out from a physical machine.

7) Now go into the settings of the new guest you want to restore from
the Acronis file and click Hard disk 2 and like above navigate to the
VHD file where now the backup file resides.

8) Start the guest and capture the Acronis Boot CD in the guests CD
drive.

Now you should be able to restore the first drive from the now
accessible backup file in the second drive.
