Are you saying it wont' work as a reader either?
Are you trying to read CDs or DVDs?
If you right-click on the cd icon in the lower let corner of the Vm's
window, what options do you get? Make sure to put a readable CD in
the drive first.

thank you for the clarification.
It is not detecting it at all. It does detect the other CD drive tho.
I have 2 CD drives, one a reader only, the other a reader/writer. It
detects only the one reader drive. Should it also detect the other as
a second reader?

Hi: Thanks for response.
So even if I upgraded to the 2007, and even if I got it to recognize
my DVD drive, it would never allow me to write?
How do you copy stuff from a Virtual machine then? Can i copy stuff to
a floppy disk?

I don't have Vista so how do I get it? Download from Microsoft? Would
i then have to create an entire new virtual machine? Or could I just
upgrade the 2004 that's installed? I have some programs set up and
working on the 2004 virtual machine now and it would take several
hours ( probably a full day) to have to set them up again with a new
virtual machine.

The reason I have to ask rather than try, is I don't have my floppy
drive working on that computer. Its hard to get a disk in as it

appeared with VPC2007.
So:
- you can only have a single optical CD drive in the guest
- the drive will be a CD drive unless you upgrade to VPC2007
- the drive is read only, you cannot write to a CD or DVD from the
guest.
- it does not matter what kind of hardware device your host has, it is

What it appears as in VPC2004 I don't remember anymore, but something

Yes. All would be required would be to update the Additions in each VM...

Steve (like others) is telling you that all VPC virtual machines emulate CD
readers only, irrespective of the physical optical drive in the host...

Er, with the greatest of respect, haven't we just spent a couple of days
getting your virtual machine networked...?

Same way you would between any other two machines (physical or virtual) on
your network

This isn't a VPC question...

No - Vista was released (to the general public) on 25 Jan 2007, VPC not
until several months later:

Do you have the Virtual Machine Additions installed in your guest?
You can tell if you are able to move the mouse between items inside
the VPC window and out to the host again without effort, then you have
them.
If you do then you can simply copy files between the guest and host
this way:
Inside the guest open a Windows Explorer window and navigate to some
folder where you want to receive a file.
Next in your host open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file you
want to copy. Grab it with the mouse and drag it onto the guest window
above the open explorer window and then drop it there.
The file will be copied from host to guest.
This trick works the other way too by dragging the file from inside
the guest and dropping it in the host.

Your problem doesn't sound very much like the same at all. I'd suggest
starting a new thread.

IIRC, VPC2004 also emulated a DVD drive. The limitation was that it could
not capture, on its own, an ISO *file* larger than 2GB. Physical DVDs loaded
in a physical drive on the host, and ISOs, even larger than 2GB, mounted by
3rd party virtual CD/DVD tools like Nero ImageDrive could be captured and
used.

it was only ISOs over 2.2GB that were an issue in 2k4
