Hi,

I've installed Virtual PC 2007 on Win XP host system, and I've created a
virtual machine with WIn 2008 Server standard. I'm trying to connect to
Internet from the guest OS but I can't. In the Settings menu for my virtual
machine, under Networking, there is a dropdown with the following values:

1. not connected
2. local only
3. Broadcom 440X.... (this is the physical network adapter on my host)
4. Shared Networking (NAT)

#1 and #2 won't work for Internet connection I believe, and I tried with #3
and #4 but I can't connect.

I went to Device Manager on my guest Win 2008 system and under Network
Adapter there was:

Intel 21140-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Emulated)

showing the following error:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Can you please advise what are the steps I need to follow to connect to
Internet from the virtual machine?

The OS didn't detect new hardware after I closed that message and of course
the Internet connection still doesn't work.

What does the error message mean and how do I fix it?

First I don't see the Broadcom 440X card in the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\<nnnn>\DriverDesc

Second there is no such entry at all:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VPCNetS2\

I'm even more confused than before now. Am I doing something wrong?

CLICK THE NETWORK ADAPTER...USE THE RIGHT ALT KEY TO BE ABLE TO GE
THERE WITH YOUR MOUSE IF IT DOES NOT LET YOU

1) Select Shared NAT
2) REBOOT.. Go in the virtual machine and click restart

Then open IE..and internet will work perfectly.

Otherwise you might needto manually create a NetworkAddress registr
key..so it doesn't get a nonsense Mac address ..
For Dell computers, this would be an Intel Based Network Adapater.

None of it resolved my issue. It was strange because I had the virtual machine working earlier in the day, so I tried to remember everything I had done throughout the day. I realized that at some point, I had disabled a built-in wireless adapter on my host machine (Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband). I figured that I wasn't using it to connect, so why leave it enabled. On a whim, I decided to re-enable it. That did the trick for me. I don't know why it worked, but it did. If you have any disabled adapters, maybe you could try enabling them just to see what happens.
