My setting are as follows:

Host OS: Win Vista Ultimate SP1
Guest OS: Win Server Std SP2

In my guest os, i installed sql server 2005 dev edition, and installed
native client in my host os. The network setting is set to Microsoft Loopback
Adapter. Turned off both firewalls. I can successfully PING between host and
guest.

Now, my problem is that i cannot connect to the sql server. Whenever i try
to connect to sql server (via object explorer/management studio) from the
host-side, im getting an error dialogue as "Login failed for user. The user
is not associated with a trusted sql server connection. (Microsoft SQL
Server, Error: 18452)".

Though i googled, i cant find anything to solve my problem.

Ive set 'Mixed mode authentication' in the sql server (guest os) and also
enabled protocols - namedpipes and tcp/ip. Still everything is in vein.

Do anyone encountered the similar situation? If so please do help me.

Every help would be appreciated.

There is a lot of potential problems here; for which you don't give any
detail. For example, is this a named instance or the default instance? Are
you trying to connect using a sql server login account or a windows account?
What's the exact address that you are using for the server/guest ? Which
protocol? Did you try with an Alias? For TCP/IP, is the sql-server
listening to the tcp/ip address that you are trying to use (In SQL-Server
Configuration Manager | SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration | Protocols
for SQL2005 | TCP/IP | Double Click | both tabs for Protocol *and* IP
Addresses) ? What kind of port, static (1433) or dynamic? Have you enable
TCP/IP and/or Named Pipes for Local and Remote connections in the SQL-Server
2005 Surface Are Configuration? Etc., etc.

On 10/19/2008, in a thread in this newsgroup with the subject "Access SQL
Server" from Sergio Torres; I've given some advices that you may want to
take a look at.

Also, why don't you just install the developer edition of SQL-Server 2005
directly onto your Vista machine? All you have to do is to install the SP2
for SQL-Server 2005 after that.

You might encounter a problem if you choose a case sensitive collation and
the windows computer name includes lower case characters but you can either
change the computer name to upper case or change the case sensitive
collation to a case insensitive collation.

(I suppose that you might have other problems if the windows computer name
has foreign characters but that's probably of no concern to you.)

This has nothing to do with Virtual PC per se..

If you're trying to connect with Windows authentication, the logged-on user
on the machine on which the SQL client is running needs to be valid on the
machine on which the SQL Server is running, and needs to be given sufficient
privileges on the database to which you are trying to connect. Windows
authentication isn't particularly suited to this sort of environment, as it
is principally designed for domain / workgroup environments.

First things first: can you connect using the 'sa' user and SQL
authentication...?
