Media Player can"t play .wav files from external usb drive

I can't seem to get Media Player 11 to play music from my Western Digital
external USB drive while in Virtual PC. I can access the drive and all
files, but Media Player shows this error when I try to play a .wav file:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn,
or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that
has been moved, renamed, or deleted."

Any help appreciated.

Possible difference here. I am using a third party file manager (Ztree).
For Explorer, try turning off doodads in view and go to straight file
lists... 'Locking up' implies a resource shortage.

Yesterday, just to try it 'as using', I set up the host root as 'shared',
displayed the sub directory tree and went seven levels down into Adobe in
Program Files and copied a largish file to my Win XP VM (which I give
128meg of RAM) root directory.

Yes, but USB connected drives on the host can be shared using Winows
networking and then they are available just like any other network
shared drive to the guest.
