Copying an existing VM

I created a new VM today for the first time by copying an existing vhc file.
I used the New>Add an Existing Virtual Machine option. It was for Server
2003. Everything worked fine. I tried the exact same procedure for a XP
Pro VM that I had, and it doesn't work.

It won't boot. Says it can't find the boot device. What could be wrong?
That procedure worked the first time.

I'm assuming that by "copying an existing vhc file" you mean you copied the
vhd file (the virtual hard disk file) and created a new vmc file? Are you
sure you've added the virtual hard disk to your new vmc? I suggest double
checking that.

If you have added your hard disk is the VM's BIOS set up to boot up from
hard disk (I'd be surprised if it wasn't.) After that - beats me!
