You have me lost a bit, the device "Net" is confusing.

When I add the loopback adapter in Vista,

First "Add Hardware" from control panel -> "next" button -> Select
"Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)"
-> "Next" button" -> Select "Network adapters" in the list" -> "Next"
button -> Select "Microsoft" in the manufacturers list -> Select
"Microsoft Loopback Adapter" in the Network adapter list -> "Next"
button -> Then it says "Hardware to install" "Microsoft Loopback
Adapter" "To start installing your hardware, click Next." -> "Next"
button -> "Finish" button.

If that doesn't work as described, I suppose you may have another
loopback type adapter's driver already installed and it's confusing
the installer. Not sure what it could be.
