Guest OS With Additions Is Unusable

I've got a Quad Core system with 4Gb RAM, ATI 1950x video card, dual monitor
displays (each at 1680x1050) running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1. I've
installed Virtual PC 2007 SP1 on the system.

I'm having issues with an XP guest OS in which it refuses to support
anything beyond 1024x768 with or without additions. *Without* VM Additions I
can see at 32bit color but after installing the Additions I'm stuck at 16
colors with incredibly SLOW performance. Hardware virtualization is enabled
and hardware acceleration is set to full for the video card driver.

Any ideas?
